A dawn blessing was held at the end of February prior to work starting on extensive refurbishment and structural strengthening of the gym, which has been closed to students since 2018. The work is expected to take around seven months and hopefully the gymnasium will once again be fit for use from the beginning of 2026. Prior to the gym being built PE was taught in the Cocoa House which was also the lunch room. Rua Gardner had petitioned the Government and Education Board for years for a proper gymnasium and finally in 1955 the Government agreed to make a grant. Building work started in 1957 and at the beginning of 1959 the gym was ready for use. The swimming pool was built concurrently after a huge fundraising effort - the gym and the pool were officially opened on 14 November 1959. The pool is still going strong and has been used consistently even during the years that the gym has been closed. Last year a heating system was installed, so that swimming lessons can start earlier and go on for longer. |
