AGGS 70s Decade Reunion
Sunday, 2 April 2023
On Sunday 2 April around 50 students and a couple of teachers from the 1970s got together for an afternoon of sharing memories and stories of the good, very strict, old days.   Ngaire Ashmore, our current Principal welcomed all the guests and reiterated that while things have changed since the 70s, the school still strives to give each student the best possible education along with a wealth of opportunities for her to reach her full potential.
Heather Ash, Chair of the AGGS Foundation and Head Girl in 1971 talked  about her time at AGGS and reminisced about some of her teachers, some of whom were very scary, but she left AGGS never doubting that she could be and do whatever she set her mind to.  She also explained a little of the aims and objectives of the AGGS Foundation.
Graeme Lay, English and Geography teacher in the 70s and 80s and latterly well-known author, was the guest speaker and had us all laughing with some of his stories.  He came to Auckland from teaching in a modern comprehensive school in London and when he started at AGGS he couldn’t get over how polite and attentive the girls were, so a short-term contract turned into a 20 + year teaching job.
A good time was had by all, including some ‘girls’ even taking the opportunity to slide down the bannisters!
