What a wonderful surprise it was to receive an e-mail telling us that Auckland Girls' Grammar School was left a most generous bequest from the estate of John Campbell Thomas. The money, $200,000 will be invested and the annual interest accrued will be used to award an Annette Solomon Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Science. Miss Solomon is an alumna of AGGS and was a Science teacher at AGGS retiring in 1979 after 23 years of single-minded service to the school. Always an uncompromising disciplinarian, she is also remembered for her thorough teaching (particularly for those who found examinations difficult) for her skill and energy as a fundraiser, and for many acts of sympathy and kindness. Our recently retired archivist remembers her well and her comment was "Miss Solomon ruled the school, both staff and students from her little room. We all had great respect for her." The scholarship will be awarded for the first time at Senior Prizegiving 2022. |
